Salmon is such a popular fish these days. I see it on every restaurant menu and in every grocery store. As much as I LOVE fish, I’ll admit salmon isn’t my favorite. It’s good don’t get me wrong, but I also think it can be boring if you’re not careful! These Fresh Salmon Burgers are perfect for breaking up your typical salmon routine. I love this recipe because it takes normal salmon filet and turns it into a different meal.

From filet to burger

To be honest, a lot of the fish I buy comes from the frozen section of the grocery store. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I started occasionally spurgling on the fresh options, when they built our local Whole Foods. I have to admit I LOVE the meat & seafood counter there. Even still, I only shop there once in awhile because ya girl has to stick to some sort of budget. During that same time frame I became a die hard ALDI fan, so I was more that thrilled when they started carrying fresh fish! The fresh salmon is in regular rotation on my grocery list, but I quickly found it to be boring just eating filet all the time.

One night, I was of course in a rush and needed to make the salmon I bought. I had seen a recipe for seafood burgers earlier in the week and decided to recreate my own for dinner. What a nice change it was! Fresh Salmon Burgers are great with or without the bun. I usually have a leftover burger the next day over a salad or in a grain bowl.

Step out of your burger box

I adore burgers of all kinds! Something about a patty in between two pieces of bread with toppings speaks to me! For these Fresh Salmon Burgers I love a perfectly ripe avocado, fresh herbs, tomato, lettuce and lemon! Since these salmon burgers are so easy and have a neutral flavor I suggest being a little adventurous with the toppings! Use guacamole, throw some herbs in the mayonnaise, or go for tarter sauce. If you want a more traditional burger a LTOP (lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle) works well too!

To me what makes this a burger rather than a salmon cake is that the fish isn’t cooked first. You chop the salmon up raw, mix the burger mixture and then cook it. I prefer this method so the burger isn’t too dry and you have more control over the texture. You do however have to cook the onions and peppers before adding them to the mix. Since fish cooks so quickly you have to ensure the vegetables have enough time to cook out the raw flavor. The onions and peppers will overpower the salmon if you just add them in raw which defeats the purpose of making these Fresh Salmon Burgers.

I’ve only cooked these indoors, but if you want to grill these treat it like you would any fish you grill. Be gentle, use a good amount of oil so they don’t stick, and don’t over cook!
